Mission, Vision, and Goals (2023 - 2024)

  • Welcome to Garrettford Elementary School!

Garrettford Elementary Schools' mission is to set a positive and productive environment that is conducive to achievement in the academic and effective domains. It is based on the premise that each child is an individual of intrinsic worth with the potential to become an independent learner and the ability to adapt to this ever-changing society. We believe that real learning involves thinking and that the ability to think can be nurtured and cultivated in everyone.

Located in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, Garrettford Elementary School was originally a twelve-room stone building erected in 1909, named after one of the original settlers of Upper Darby, William Garrett. After building expansions in 1921 and 1941, the present building welcomed students in 1942. Today, Garrettford Elementary School is home to approximately 600 students and 68 teachers and staff. The 2009-2010 school year marked Garrettford Elementary School's 100th year of providing excellence in education to the students of the Upper Darby School District.

At Garrettford Elementary School, Extended Day Care is available before and after school. The building is equipped with Google Chromebooks for all students and interactive computer boards used in each classroom for instruction. Young Authors’ Day is held annually and encompasses weeklong events with surprise guest readers, special activities and awards. Instrumental instruction is offered to third, fourth, and fifth graders. Garrettford’s Choir performs throughout the year and boasts many students who have been selected to perform with the Philadelphia Boys’ Choir. Garrettford Elementary School prides itself on providing academic excellence in a friendly, family atmosphere.

A Family Literacy/Black History Night is held each winter, where we focus on cultivating support from home for our children's efforts to become more literate in language arts and math.  Recently, our fifth-grade students' artwork was exhibited at the Brandywine River Museum.

Garrettford was recognized as a National School of Excellence in 1989-1990. Teachers, parents, students, and support staff work together to provide an environment that allows each student to realize individual self-worth while instilling values of good citizenship. Partnerships with parents and community organizations are keys to the continued success of Garrettford Elementary School. A strong Home and School Association is instrumental in organizing opportunities for family events throughout the year.
